Club meeting - June

Hello Members and my apologies for the lateness of my reminder for the end of JUNE meeting. I trust everyone is keeping warm and well and keeping the hobby alive, there has been plenty of activity on Trade me and in local auction houses of late so there should be some great items on the NEW FINDS table this month. I would like to encourage attendance at this meeting as we have some important topics to discuss on the direction of the club and following on from the May AGM which highlighted some areas within the club that need to be discussed and voted on. Also, would like to acknowledge the New Committee and again give a BIG THANKYOU to Steve Costello who has stood down from being Treasurer of the club for at least the last 2 decades!! Great achievement, Helen.

The meeting will be this Sunday 30th at the Philatelic Centre, 67 Mandeville Street, commencing at 6.45pm for a friendly catchup and sales tables for those of you who wish to do a bit of trading.

ITEM OF THE NIGHT is themed on Medical / Dental collectables: OH, how I remember the days at the Murder House! Let’s see what items can adorn the table this month this is a great topic and think of all those little things you may have tucked away over the years dust them off bring them into to share a truly interesting collecting line

BOTTLES OF THE NIGHT, QUACK CURES. How many of us have found these in box lots out digging or on the sales tables at shows bring them along and share them on Sunday night and if you have some info on the firm or the product it would be great to share if not one of your fellow collectors could enlighten you

BOTTLE BOOK: Great progress has been made in recent months on the production of the club book and there is light at the end of the tunnel we are just putting the final histories together and updating relevant information on the different firms having contacted  descendants of some of our local aerated water manufacturers the team have retrieved some interesting information.

MID WINTER DINNER JULY 28: Need numbers this Sunday to be confirmed please. Theme is MATARIKI. Matariki is the Maori name for a group of seven stars known as the Pleiades star cluster. Some people think of Matariki as a mother star with six daughters, and it is often referred to as the Seven Sisters. Others think that Matariki are the ‘eyes of the god’. When Ranginui, the sky father, and Papatuanuku, the earth mother, were separated by their children the god of wind, Tawhirimatea, became angry, tearing out his eyes and hurling them into the heavens. Matariki appears in the eastern sky sometime around the shortest day of the year and is thought to determine how successful the harvest crop will be in the coming season. The brighter the stars, the more productive the crop will be. As were a little late for Mid-Winter Christmas the committee thought of this theme so we will be focusing on the Stars and promoting the success of our collecting with each other’s company for a meal at the Club rooms from 6pm on Sunday 28 July, $23 per person. MENU, Dinner rolls / butter, Roast Beef or Chicken, Whole gourmet potatoes, Baby Peas, Whole baby Carrots, Gravy. Dessert, Individual Trifle Cups, Tea & Coffee

NEW FINDS: Let’s see the table full of all your new finds its great to share and it inspires collecting so please make the effort even if its not a latest find. Don’t forget to add your item to the list so it can be recorded so out of town members and those that miss the meeting get to see what’s being turned up in the region

There will be our normal raffle. Door charge is $3 per person for the meeting please support the club by paying this small fee as it helps to pay for the lovely clean and well-lit rooms. If anyone has had a change of contact details, please advise Helen so our records can be updated, and you can be kept up to date with forth coming events. Don’t forget to clip on your NEW NAME TAG at this meeting so please support getting to know other collectors by wearing your tag and remember to return it at the end of the meeting. It’s a great way to break the ice and start up that collecting conversation and it may be sparking a new addition to your collection or a good friendship with a fellow collector
