RELIANCE, A MYSTERY COMPANY OR PRODUCT

There are several known RELIANCE cast iron bottle openers from NZ, Types B, C, E and F, see below.

Lees & Evans, Reliance, Christchurch (1891-1913) used many types of bottles with their "Reliance" anchor trade mark on them but they never used crown tops.  The bottles they used were glass Internal Threads, Hamiltons (Torpedoes), Codds (Marble Bottles), Lamonts, Chapmans Patent (Rubber Ball Stoppers), Soda Syphons, Pottery Ginger Beer bottles with either cork stoppers or internal threads.

The "Reliance Patent"  is a type of marble bottle and although Lees & Evans didn't use that type, some other NZ firms did. Marble or codd bottles were made at Barnsley England to the Reliance patent and shipped to New Zealand for use.

So, the question is, what was the "Reliance" company or product that was being advertised on these openers? And, of course there could have been more than one company or product. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Searching the National Library of New Zealand's Papers Past comes up with many possibilities...but so far none may be directly linked to an opener...here are a few examples from the 1930's...

One good candidate for the company being advertised on one or more of the RELIANCE openers is the RELIANCE TYRE & RUBBER CO LIMITED, which was incorporated in New Zealand on 26 May 1948, and was bought out by Dunlop in 1970.

Does anyone know exactly how widespread this company was within New Zealand?

Certainly there were RELIANCE TYRE & RUBBER CO LIMITED outlets in Wellington, (20 Kent Tce, see here), someplace in the Manawatu (see the picture of the Reliance Tyre and Rubber Co. (Manawatu) Ltd building here), another in Gisborne (see image at the bottom of this photo news page here).

There is a photo of a RELIANCE TYRE & RUBBER CO LIMITED outlet here (KBR Reliance Tyre Co. K E Niven and Co: Commercial negatives. Ref: 1/2-215968-F. Alexander Turnbull Library, Wellington, New Zealand. http://natlib.govt.nz/records/23123841). And a description of a RELIANCE TYRE & RUBBER CO LIMITED outlet being at the corner of Dublin Street and Victoria Avenue, Wanganui here (not certain if the above photo is linked to this).

If anyone has more information or feedback on the RELIANCE TYRE & RUBBER CO LIMITED, please let us know.
